About the Journal
Focusing on the 3rd-8th centuries CE—a period of deep political and cultural change—the CoH explore diverse themes, including the shift from Roman rule to the rise of barbarian kingdoms, urban and economic transitions and the evolution of cultural and religious practices.
The CoH draw contributions from 13 countries: the 11 Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia), together with Hungary and Turkey. This transnational collaboration enriches perspectives with a comparative, cross-border approach essential for understanding this historical period.
By publishing in the major Western European languages, the journal provides a widely accessible platform for scholars, educators, and enthusiasts alike.
The journal thus aims to become a key reference for researchers, teachers, students and enthusiasts of history and archaeology, by providing a forum for innovative research. It favours interdisciplinary work and new approaches, whether through case studies, regional summaries or cross-disciplinary thematic analyses. Moreover, it encourages young researchers to contribute and to take advantage of the platform to disseminate their research to an international academic audience.
By publishing articles mainly English, but also French, Italian, German and Spanish, the CoH aim to become a vehicle for intellectual and scientific exchange, while highlighting research that is often inaccessible to the international academic public. Through a rigorous and diversified approach, this journal aims to advance knowledge of this region and this period, often wrongly regarded as marginal in European history.
